I just asked this question, and my cousin, who was a waitress, answered. First, they get really good coffee and roast it brown but not burnt (like Starbucks). But the reason DD coffee isn't as good at home, is because their coffee makers heat the water to incredibly hot temperatures that we can't do with our regular coffee makers at home.

RE:
What makes Dunkin' Donuts coffee taste so good?
This stuff is like crack! And why doesn't it taste the same when I grind DD beans at home?

I really don't think most home coffee makers get the water hot enough. I have the same problem. Coffee I make in my five-year-old, twenty dollar coffee pot never tastes as good as McDonald's coffee or the cup I get at the breakfast diner. Problem is, I am morally opposed to buying a new machine as long as the old machine still works. Its quite a conundrum.

because when you make it at home, you can't add the secret ingredient like they do....(it's a secret additive that is insanely addictive to people, mostly in northern America...seems to have a DD on every street corner up here!!!!)
That way, you keep buying the ground coffee to try and make it like they do, but you still go to DD to order up some coffee because you can't quite make it taste the same.
Those sneaky buggers!!

If you are using the same beans and it doesn't taste as good it may be several things. DD may use filtered water. They also use very clean machines. Is your coffee machine as clean as possible? (You should clean it weekly with a vinegar mixture to remove oils and residue). If your home tap water is treated or has a lot of minerals, try using bottled water or water filter through a unit such as a BRITA. The water makes all the difference in the world. When I was dating my husband he raved to his mom about my mom's coffee. His mom bought the same coffee and it never tasted as good. His mom thought my mom lied to her about the brand, but it turned out it was the water. His mom used Chicago tap water and my mom used well water. (I came from small Indiana town)
So try cleaning your machine - and try different water. Hope that helps!

It's gotta be the beans!
And it may be the water they use. We started using bottled water at work in our coffee and the taste is definitely different.

lots of sugar&milk! and of course, the psychological edge dunkin' donuts has over home-brewed coffee.

It's probably the machines they make it in. They make it so much they machines go through so much coffee, that makes it taste better. LOL
