Vancomycin is the usual line of treatment (IV) for serious MRSA infections. Sometimes the treatment is as dangerous as the disease itself if a patient is very compromised. Any MRSA infection is serious and very contagious. Thanks for asking a question that can benefit others. Godloveya.

A serious infection will normally be treated with intravenus antibiotics, typically vancomycin. A mild infection, such as a small cut on an arm could very well clear up on its own. It does just depend on cirmcumstances. Unfortuately the death rates for MRSA shoot up when the infection comes after major surgery.
approx 2/3 adult UK population carries MRSA on their skin...

its actually called Methcillin Resistant Stapholococcus Aureus. i've never heard of this golden staph thing, even if you were referring to it...i don't know.
scientists have developed a program that has generated (theoretically) the chemical formula and structure of a compound that would defeat every single strain of this bacterium.
the problem was, until now, that this bacterium has a life cycle that is very short. as you keep attacking the population of bacterium with different antibiotics, soon, the whole population becomes resistant to ALL the antibiotics. hence the problem, we were running out of antibiotics to throw at this bacteria. but now, it seems we have found a way to beat it once and for all.

MRSA actually comes in two types.
C-MRSA (community MRSA) is actually more virulent because of chemicals it produces. The good news is that C-MRSA is sensitive to "simple" antibiotics such as Bactrim as well as vanco/Zyvox.
H-MRSA (hospital) is genetically different. This strain doesn't produce the same virulence factors (chemicals), but generally only responds to Zyvox, Tygacil, Daptomycin, and Vanco.

A doctor needs to prescribe a second-line defense antibiotic since this infection is resistant to typical antibiotics. It is curable though if you take the antibiotic regimen exactly as directed.
