We have always left dry food and water out for our cats at all times.
They each get a half can of wet food twice a day once in the morning and then once in the late afternoon.

One can of cat food is usually sufficient for a cat. If you are not feeding canned you should go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Why Cats Need Canned Food". It is at the end of about fifty articles including many on proper nutrition and diet for cats.
Cheap canned food is very bad with by-product meat (treated with known cancer-causing chemicals and labeled "unfit for human consumption"). Dr. Hovfe also has an article titled "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food" which will give you guidelines to help in finding the right food for your cat.

I go with "free feeding" my cat. She turns her nose away from wet food so its easy. I leave 1 cup of dry food out in the morning. Sometimes she finishes it by the end of the day, sometimes she doesnt. If she does I'll give her another 1/2 cup until the morning. She eats when she wants, and walks away when done.
Oh and my cat is 5 years old and 7 lbs. She's no heffer

Hi Kylee...generally, cats benefit from a scheduled feeding such as twice a day (e.g. morning and evening) to prevent overeating. Some cats are nibblers and others are gorgers. Both can have a tendency to cause obesity in cats later in life as well as the type of food fed.

I keep dry food out all day for my 4 month old. I also give her 3 oz cans of food 3 times a day. I read in my kitten book that kittens need more food because they are growing. Cats need less, like 5 or 6 oz of food a day.
