Depending on your thinking, there are many objectives, some of which may have an ulterior motive. Presumably, the original goal was to dethrone Saddam Hussein since he apparently (according to US officials) had weapons of mass destruction or was in the process of building them. Once he was deposed, the next task would be to establish and support a democratic government, eliminating strongholds in opposition to American policy and Iraqi democratic ambitions.

There are some ulterior motives thrown about, primarily that the invasion occurred as a grab for Iraq's oil resources. Another theory is to spite Iran with the goal of preventing whatever ongoing weapons programs they might have.

Ostensibly, the goal of removing Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction programs is the official reason. Detractors believe the goal was to secure Iraq's oil supplies.

The objectives were not clearly understood because Bush kept changing his directives.

It appears now that a Civil War brewed up and though, the Iraqi Governemnt is at hand more problems erupted and since we are there it looks like were there to stay for right now until law and order is accomplished. We also want to be in good with Iraq because of the Oil too!

Saudi Arabia is going to back up the U.S to remain there so it looks like we have back up staying power and money for this job, but it will cost lives to do it. The soldiers keep coming back in body bags. Its' hard to fight War where bombs go off in the ground, kill our soldeirs and no enemy is around to shoot at!~!

That is some real scarry shiiiit. I'm an Airforce Disabled Veteran and speak from my experience in Iraq.

"Now, I believe the facts that have brought us to this fateful vote are not in doubt. Saddam Hussein is a tyrant who has tortured and killed his own people, even his own family members, to maintain his iron grip on power. He used chemical weapons on Iraqi Kurds and on Iranians, killing over 20 thousand people. Unfortunately, during the 1980's, while he engaged in such horrific activity, he enjoyed the support of the American government, because he had oil and was seen as a counterweight to the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran....

In 1991, Saddam Hussein invaded and occupied Kuwait, losing the support of the United States. The first President Bush assembled a global coalition, including many Arab states, and threw Saddam out after forty-three days of bombing and a hundred hours of ground operations. The U.S.-led coalition then withdrew, leaving the Kurds and the Shiites, who had risen against Saddam Hussein at our urging, to Saddam's revenge.

In 1998, the United States also changed its underlying policy toward Iraq from containment to regime change and began to examine options to effect such a change, including support for Iraqi opposition leaders within the country and abroad.

It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security.... "

Note that the 1998 policy of "regime change" was BILL CLINTON's !!!

The Iraq invasion has been over and done with for years. That was a short story. It was to remove Saddam, his cronies, and the WMD. That has been done. We are there by the invitation of the Iraqi government now to provide security while they get themselves stabilized.
