Will Windows Vista upgrade my "not valid" Windows XP?

When trying to update Windows Media player and other Windows applications, my computer was scanned by Microsoft. The result said my copy of XP was not "valid". My question is will the Vista upgrade work or will i have to get the full version? Please help!!

you've got to have valid version or nothing will get upgrated
