I don't think that's possible anymore ... unless it's a very small house, or in need of extensive renovations.

I used to live around there. That's the Grand Trunk mainline. My opinion for an automobile-centric Detroit-area person is don't worry about it, you'll become accustomed to the sound within a few days and it won't bother you in the slightest. The frequency of trains doesn't tell you anything, because that can change dramatically for no apparent reason. The point is, more or fewer doesn't change anything, you won't notice them anyway, any more than you notice the roar of traffic on Woodward. They just become background noise. My opinion for a somewhat more enlightened young person thinking about the future: That line had the last commuter railroad in metro Detroit. Commuter trains are coming back all across America in a big way... they've been doing so for 20 years, but all this foreign oil/enviro stuff is just making it happen faster. I fully expect Detroit will get commuter trains again, and that will be the first line to be reactivated, because Amtrak is already on it and the stations are mostly still there. That'll be a nice asset for you - even if you don't use it, it'll raise the value of your house. And Dieter, sure sounds like you were trying to scare her. Many millions of Americans live near RR lines, and somehow, they do OK. Worry about asteroids much?
