why do some people refuse to spit? I wanna know?

My brother who is now 22 years old, might have an iq of high 80s, refuse to spit when he have massive amount of phlegm. Instead he will attempt to cough til he throw up, but he would make 3 light swallow sound in between each cough.
For years, we never offer him gums cause he always swallows them instead of spitting it out. Is this some type of phobia, anyone have this problem or know someone with this problem?

Update: he swallow his gum, he wont even take it out with his hand either. His build-up of phlegm make him so sick that he throw up, but he still refuse to spit it out. Also he is not very clean since he rub his excrement over everything where i have to clean up, no way he is disgusted of spitting.

Considering there is a phobia for just anout anything I would Imagine so, but am not quite sure, you could type in "phobias" to a search engine or try looking at a psychology website though.

Grosse question.
We are all different. Some like to spit, some of us don't. I personally find spitting disgusting. I don't spit chewing gum out, I take it from my mouth, wrap it in paper or something similar, and put it in the rubbish bin. I'm assuming most good mannered people do the same. Why does it bother you? Phlegm...this really is a personal thing, and makes me gag to think of it. I know, I literally (the "V" word) if I have to cough that up. So perhaps your brother has the same affliction.

Because he is more civilized than you ,try that in Singapore and they fine you a thousand bucks,you are not allowed to chew gum there,don't flush the toilet 500 bucks.only in third world countries do people spit like in Asia and the mid east,how do you think they took people off sand pans into the 21 century?the mid east has brown spit everyplace they are uncivilized .They have no manners
