The shaving Cream is more important than the razor!
I have soft skin and tough hair.
The best shaving cream for me on the market is Gillette Fusion (not the razor the shave cream - more about that later). I also like the Gillette Complete Sensitive Skin. It is much more delicate than the Fusion cream and is easier on the skin. The Gillette Multiglide gel works even better than both, but I don't like having to wash it off my face after I'm done shaving.
You could give me a can of most other brands for free and I wouldn't use it, Edge for example.
Electrics shavers have their place. You can travel with them, and they don't need blades, but they DO need periodic sharpening, and in my experience they NEVER will get you as close as a blade. Plus the good ones are well over $100 and there are so many gimmicks - how would you ever know which to choose?
My favorite blade razor for closeness is the Schick Quattro. Schick always cut closer, and this one never nicks me (which earlier Schick models did). It does need to be kept clean (a small design flaw lets moisture sit inside the handle) so I do soak the handle in alcohol every few weeks to keep it fresh.
I also use the M3 Power. It isn't as close as the Quattro but it is a little more comfortable, and I like the vibrating gimmick.
I haven't tried the powered Quattro - so I can't say if it the best of both or just another technology gone wrong.
Don't waste your time or money on the Fusion razor. On paper it is the ultimate but in practice it is a zebra (a horse designed by a committee). It does nothing well.

I am greek italian and have lots of hair as well....so I feel your pain. In a pinch I will use an electric shaver by norelco. They are fine, they get the job done. they do not get as close/smooth as normal razor. I never use them for my underarms as they usually are too rough and make it very raw. Same goes for behind your knees. electric shavers make that area itch like mad. I personally prefer using a razor and shave gel. I find my skin is less irritated and it last longer than electric.

Shavers do work for some guys. BUT NOT all. I myself have a heavy facial hair growth. I have used an electric razor in the past and it was garbage. I have since used nothing but a razor. And the one I like best is the Mach 3. But what is good for me is NOT necessarily good for you. I would say go buy the electric razor and go from there. They are NOT that all expensive. Give it a try.

It takes time to get used to any form of shaving and different methods suit different people.
There's general agreement, even among doctors, however, that the least irritant form of shaving the face for most people -- both males and females -- is the Norelco electric razors which use a differnt approach to cutting hair. They're different even from other rotary models.

Electric razors are irritating in different ways. They leave bumps and you miss spots. When you use a regular razor (fusion) wet your face with hot water, put a moisturizer on your face wait a minute or longer than use shaving cream. In a pinch when you have little time you use an electric razor. I have a Norelco smart touch xl.

there is not any such factor. no longer something does greater advantageous than a razor. If he needs an extensive shave he will could follow the blade. His face is surely no longer comfortable with an electric razor. An electris razor does not get an extensive shave. -Connor

I have found over time that nothing beats the good old Bic disposable razors. And you can buy a whole bag for less than the cost of other refills. Electric razors either leave stubble or razor burn.

My dad had trouble with getting a good shave. He always had itchy stubble! But it did help when he switched to an electric razor and it seems like he didn't have to shave as often as well.

my husband uses a electric trimmer, to shorten the hair, then he shaves with a regular mans razor, has 3 blades and he never complains about itching
