To show your alive and on the less than perfect planet earth. If it always fell upwards you would be in a perfect place ie heaven and so dead. least you know your alive even if you have to redo the toast.

Actually, it doesn't. On a test done by the Mythbusters (its a show on the discovery channel) if you butter your bread hard enough, it will create a pocket in the toast and actually act like a parachute and land not-butter-side up. So if your prone to toast-falling, butter, and butter hard.

Stuff Mythbusters! In my may house it always falls face down! Probably because I lavish so much butter on it is way heavier that side!
