Having worked with water testing while on active duty, I came to prefer using a Brita filter over bottled water. Water is safe only after it is treated, with chlorine, to kill bacteria. It can kill and maintain the water safety only if there is a residual of chlorine left after the intial treatment. So a bleach smell means the water is safe, even if it is not tasty. A Brita filter makes short work of removing that nasty taste, and removing the excess minerals and metals, leaving me a nice tasty glass of water. Bottled water doesn't have to ever be treated. You do not know where the water came from, you don't even know if it's clean enough to drink. You hope it is, but you can't ever be certain. The companies can make all the claims they want, but the law doesn't require them to do anything except be clean. If there is a problem with the water source, it's never discovered until after the fact, after many people have already become sick from it. So, I'd rather my water arrive to me treated, and then I can filter out the parts I don't want. But at least it arrives safe to drink, even if it's not so tasty and has a higher mineral content.

Neither; tap water in the UK is absolutely safe and fine to drink: and near-on free in comparison.
