you find a doctor friend. Bring the doctor friend home for dinner or tea. Introduce the doctor friend to you mother. Let them interact. Brief the doctor friend before hand of your mother's condition. If they click and become friends, most probably your mother may visit a doctor.

now that can be a hard thing. even more since it is your mother, well when she goes to her normal doctor, tell him and have him talk to her about how she treats people , and maybe he can get her to go, other wise you are going to have to find some other way, you may be able to get a psychiatrist to come to the house, and not let her know what his job is, and he can have a talk with her, and then give you some sugguestions, he may just give her some sugguestions. It sounds like she is just rude and she does not care what anyone thinks of it she is going to say what she wants, and tough if you don't like it. She may not have an mental illiness at all, she just may enjoy verbally harassing others.
also she knows it gets your goat.

you would have to go the legal route and have an assessment done that way, through the courts, prove she isnt well, and cant make healthy decisions for herself. if she truly has a mental illness she isnt in her right mind to make these decisions, what she experiences is normal for her.
in the mean time take measures to look after yourself. find someone you can talk to about how she affects you and maybe find some coping skills and different ways of reacting to her so that it doesnt hurt you.
mental illness is a complicated thing and often people with the issues dont want to admit they are sick, because of societal stigma. try and keep this in mind as you try to find your mom help. she might fight you tooth and nail on this and youre going to have to be the strong one.
good luck!

pathfinder is right. If she won't go of her own free will the only other alternative is to have your mother declared insane by the courts. That's a sad thing but if she really starts to physically hurt people you have to do something. I'm very sorry about that. Best of luck and I hope she gets better.

Can YOU talk to the family doctor about this? You can't force HER to go.
You're 31...try and stay away because you'll be affected by it.

You can't make a person see a doctor against their will, unless you have them declared mentally incompetent.
