I have been taking Zoloft, an now the generic equivalent, for about 11 years. It works for me. I had several episodes of chronic depression. Other drugs did not work for me.
It may take 6 weeks for the drug to show any results. It may take a year for a patient to feel relieved.
I hope your friend is seeing a psychiatrist rather than a regular MD. If your friend is just starting to take the meds, say less than two weeks, he should be in contact with a psychiatrist every day, to let the doctor know how he is doing.

I took it for a few months for Post Partum Depression. It really helped me. It was after I had our fifth baby. I weaned myself off of it. I didn't want to stay on it forever. Not everyone can take it. Your friend may be allergic to it. She should quit taking it. I heard it can do more harm than good.

It is different for everyone. I took it and all it made me do was stay awake all night and I also couldn't eat. I couldn't even force myself to put food in my mouth. I would lay awake all night because my mind wouldn't shut off and my body was tense. It didn't work for me.
