Per engineering in general, nanotechnology is a hot area. Obviously much straight coding is done overseas, but project management remains a good job as does design. Likewise, the creative side is likely to stay local, such as Flash, Javascript, etc. You could also parlay this into a job on Wall Street where programming skills must be combined with either finance and/or statistics. Hedge funds that have trading programs are getting pretty big. There is also demand for AI in the intelligence community. The trick is to pick where you want to end up and then learn the skill for that industry.

I do engineering work and hardware seems to be the most active right now. You can only write so much unique C++. The hot topic right now is RF. Low noise amplifiers, low phase noise phase lock loops and especially a receiver on a chip. The goal is to do a total receiver digitally using a DSP but the front end RF frequencies are the limit now. You have to convert to an intermediate frequency before you can get into the DSP. I would say anything in the telecom field is hot right now.

Well I think the most interesting stuff comes on the hardware side. Programming hasn't really changed much.

laser chips I think sound cool. Holographic storage is the next generation of data storage.

Wireless technology is still hasn't reached it's full potential. Ultrawideband is a new technology I had a chance to play with. It hasn't been standardized completely. Transfer speeds are really good.
