President Kennedy said it best in 1963:

Address by President Kennedy at The American University, Washington, D.C., June 10, 1963

I have . . . chosen this time and this place to discuss a topic on which ignorance too often abounds and the truth is too rarely perceived-yet it is the most important topic on earth: world peace.

What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living,

/Snip/

First: Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it unreal. But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief. It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable, that mankind is doomed, that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.

We need not accept that view. Our problems are manmade; therefore they can be solved by man.

/snip/.

I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of universal peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream. I do not deny the values of hopes and dreams, but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.

Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace, based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions
/snip/
Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process, a way of solving problems.

With such a peace there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor; it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement. . . .
/snip/
The United States, as the world knows, will never start a war. We do not want a war. We do not now expect a war. This generation of Americans has already had enough - more than enough-of war and hate and oppression. We shall be prepared if others wish it. We shall be alert to try to stop it.

Unite.

Unite, Unite, Unite with those who are battling terrorism on the worldwide front. Remember this.. United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

Avoid War? Again, Unite. Ask yourself one question, had our country united and shown a undivideable front what message would that have sent to Saddam and the rest of the world before we ever invaded Iraq. In my opinion, it would have told them that our country was serious about stopping _any_ totalitarian regime dictator and that their philosphy had no place in a free world. Because we looked weaker by being so divided we sent the message that our country could be beaten if the resistence was kept at the level it was.

We haven't lost the War YET... We have handed them the win of a major part of the War though.

Since you used "us" in your follow up sentence I will assume you're question is global and not for you as an individual.

I don't think we can avoid terrorism and war. Not in the near near future anyway. Too many things have been set in motion by too many governments, organizations and individuals.

We can limit wars and we can preempt terrorist attacks (when we discover them) but we cant avoid them.

Sorry that I don't have a positive answer that solves the problem.

Ah, there is some truth in that; violence has always hidden behind religion. The crusaders slaughtered tens of thousands of people in the name of Christianity. Bush has caused the death of over 300,000 innocent women and children in Iraq in the name of Christianity and democracy.
Come on, be sensible; religion has nothing to do with terror or violence. It is just a pretext people use to hide their real intentions. All wars and terror arise from the fact that one wants to get more than his/her share of wealth on this planet. The 20th Century has witnessed two world wars that resulted in the death of millions of people all because some nations (industrialists) wanted to control energy sources (petrol). Today's "low warfare" or terrorist activities as they call it stems from the same reasons.
Stop blaming "the others", and try understand them. And before you blame someone, look in the mirror first.

With muslims around, there is no avoidance unfortunately. For some reason, they have come out of the woodwork in the last 5 or so years to stir trouble, particulary in Australia.

Why? I'm not sure. I wasn't even aware of muslims until their extremists cousins bombed the twin towers.

Oh well, thems the breaks...

Stopping Terrorism;
Hunt the Terrorists wherever they are and bring them to justice.
Seek out any organizations donating funds and shut them down.
Seek out agencies recruiting terrorists and arrest them.

Stopping War;
Not so easy......

Look at Somolia, Serbia, Darfur, Malaysia, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, and all the other places where one group decides to kill another.

Avoid terrorism?. Like me or not, it's fueled by religions. Identify all those religions that sponsor terrorism, create havoc in other regions in the name of religion. Find out the religion that is common in all these conflicts. It's the same rule teachers apply in the school. Find that one who always fights with other kids. Once these religions are publicly identified, debated and condemned on a open stage, people that follow them will feel guilty. Instead we pass on comments saying that 'that religion is peaceful only the people that are following bla..bla..'. That's mere hypocracy and it can only worsen the things.

They will stop their fellows to go towards it. It's like if your son has done mischief and if your neighbour brings it to your notice, then you will surely punish him or teach him a lesson so that he would never do it. But if your neighbour does it himself, you will get angry on your neighbour than on your own. At the end it will turn up like a fight between you and your neighbour.

By silencing people like Thorgirl would be a start..talk about spreading hate. With people like her representing America you could maybe understand why the muslims hate so much. She has a nerve calling anybody a radical.

It is a very complex question and there is really no "best" answer but a whole series of alternatives that must be considered.
above all is injustice. If there is a way to erradicate it then we would be on our way to avoid terrorism.

Thorgirls insane rant notwithstanding, it seems to me there are two approaches we as "non-terrorists" can take:

1. Come to some understanding and agreement on ways we can all live together, make babies and money together, laugh together, grow old in peace and security TOGETHER, (hint hint the word I'm trying to emphasize is TOGETHER, did everybody get that?). For one side or another to say we CANNOT live together is suicidal and irrational and any world leader who believes this must be ridiculed and harassed until he or she dare not voice such diseased feelings again. THEN, once we all agree on what is FAIR trade and understanding between all people and once we outlaw such racist or sexist organizations as the Taliban and the KKK worldwide then maybe we can start working to solve some the real problems we have facing our planet. We as a species have such tremendous power, power to change the way things have been done all along, to shift the power from the "Haves" to the "Have Nots" but there has to be PARITY for all. If there's to be another Miitary draft, NO DEFERRMENTS, not for school, not for marriage, etc. NO DEFERRMENTS. Keep it fair for all, then resentment is fostered only in diseased minds.

2. Keep doing what we've been doing: Give money to huge corporations to continue fighting wars against ideas, while the real struggle is at home and is for the hearts and souls of your children, to make sure we enough cannon fodder for the next country invaded for oil. When "The Matrix" first came out, it was a huge hit, because it struck a chord with many people worldwide. A LOT of people feel they have this incredible burdon on them, to produce, to conform, to spout the party line, because facing their problems as adults is simply too much for them, to consume, to spend, to ACCEPT.

Just because a fat, loud buffoon is hollering nonsense on your radio does not mean he is intellectually qualified to have an opinion which should be broadcast, no more than a tall skinny geek who interviews lesbians all day. To elevate EITHER of these past the level of comic relief is inappropriate. These programs are diversion, entertainment only, a way to waste time. Anyone who considers it any more than that is in serious psychological trouble. Develop critical thought on your own, start by accepting NOTHING you hear from ANY politician do your own research into issues which interest you. But for the sake of your own soul, learn to think for yourself and realize its in ANY leaders best interest for you to stay asleep. If you start questioning, they have to start ANSWERING and thats something NO Leader wants.

3. Make it too costly to conduct terror. You blow up my bus, I blow up your neighborhood. You blow up my store, I level your town. You take down one tower ina plane, I turn your state into a parking for OUR aircraft. Anyone detonating a suicide bomb, their entire families are incarcerated. Make it too costly and the bombings will stop. With no other recourse, these "terrorists" will have to come to the negotiating table. THEN we can (see Option #1). Of course, this doesnt work in the long run either. We've been doing this since Sept 11, 2001 and there are more terrorists, not fewer, more attacks in more countries, not fewer, etc. But of course, thats the whole point. Just as there is more money in treating disease than there is in curing it, theres more money in FIGHTING wars than in WINNING them. It makes sense to wage wars against ideas, because you never have to stop fighting them, you just change the ideas to fit who the enemy of the day is. We get rid of all Muslims, then we got Haitians to defeat, then Asians, then Russians, then who? Why, out own citizens of course.
