It is 6 months without a visa.
They will ask you how long you are staying and why the visit etc.
This is definate as my husband (US) goes to UK with me frequently.
Here is some info I took from a site:
How do I qualify to travel to the UK as a visitor?
You must be able to show that:
* you want to visit the UK for no more than six months
* you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit, and
* you have enough money to support yourself and live in the UK without working or needing any help from public funds.

Hi, as i undertsand it, like GB citizens going to the US - you have six weeks in the UK with out a prearranged visa, other than that given out on the plane.
However, if you apply ahead of time IN THE US you could get up to six months, which is the standard visitor visa.
My experiance of doing immigration casework, from just over a year ago would make me stress - do not try and change your visa once in the country. Visas can only be applied for out side of the UK and any internal immigration appplications take months if not years to be considered by the Home Office and in such curcumstances are usually declined - Have I helped?

I'm not entirely sure about US citizens, but I know that Pakistanis and Polish people can just turn up and never, ever leave whilst claiming benefits, housing, legal aid and healthcare. And all the while the poor blighters have to drive round in the most awful brand new Mercedes and Range Rovers.
