The Universal Life Church promotes religious tolerance and curiosity from my understanding. I have an uncle who is an ordained minister and he sometimes goes on a social network the ULC has set up for their ordained ministers to talk with other ministers about religious and social topics. The ULC seems to be more about prompting discourse on religion and the sharing and appreciation of the ideas of others than preaching dogmatic religious principles. If that sense I think this organization would be a great fit for you. If nothing else just check out their websites. From what I gather there are multiple ULCs but the Monastery popped up first in my Google search.

I'm thinking you became a minister so that you can perform marriages that are recognized by the state, correct?

Just because you were forced to take that avenue as a means to an end, it doesn't make you a member of the "Universal Life" religion.

If you're like me, I would simply prefer to be called Spiritual rather than be associated with any particular Religion.

Can you not simply say you're not Religious and therefore you don't have a religion, or do you have to declare a religion on marriage certificates when you complete them? If you have to fill in something and you're not sure what you're allowed to put, remember... it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission... put whatever you want!

(I'd probably put "Spiritual/Not Religiously Affiliated")

No. I think most people realize that Universal Life Church is synonymous with "scamming" the ability to perform marriages and burials. Nobody is confused by it. My Atheist brother is just such a "minister". He finds it highly amusing. I think it's the sacrilegious nature (Free Instant Online Ordination!) of the whole thing that gives him a chuckle.

I find it sad that so many people defend this "church". It makes the less popular religions (like pagan and wiccan churches) look ridiculous to the public at large and allow untrained people to claim status that they haven't earned in these religions. Legitimate training is out there and this takes away from it.

The larger religions don't recognize it all. Imagine a Buddhist priest being presented with these credentials by a monk. LOL.

Answer Faerie: Don't be so defensive and confrontational (it isn't very "spiritual" of you) LOL. I have no problem with legitimate schools of ordination for pagans, wiccans, spiritualists and the like...schools that require training, work, effort and actual learning rather than filling out an internet form. Those who go this route are creating those issues for themselves and making their religious beliefs a matter of ridicule. I find it unfair that you would accuse me of such. I hold those with degrees in spiritualism in high regard. I hold those who go the lazy route and get a free, 5 second internet ordination in a bit of contempt. They do nothing to further the credence of their own beliefs. Instead, they do the opposite.

And on the theist/non-theist note...it's my own "non-theist" brother than mocks this particular "church" the most...and he holds their "ordination". Why? Because they would let him. He waves it around at parties to show how gullible people are.

Universalism sounds very fitting, then. Both Universal Life and Buddhism are non-theistic, and there's no reason they cannot co-exist peacefully.

Lori, why do you consider it a scam that non-theists prefer a celebrant who shares their world view? are you one of those theists who would consign us to a cold, impersonal, perfunctory civil ceremony, or even deny us a wedding altogether in a Christian supremacist proprietary snit-fit?

Oh noooooo,
GOD doesn't like that.
He wants only Him to be worshiped, HE is a jealous GOD.
All religions are not to be for HIS Children. Some of
those you mention are pagan.
You better wake up. Do you read a Christian Bible?
You need to read the King James version.

you are a minister of NOTHING. Then again, so are all the others, since all religion is a hoax to enforce social norms and gain control over people.
