Continental or JAL, especially if it's a long flight. Flying intercontinental, I also try to make sure its a 777, though some other newer planes might be as good or better.

But the only train rides which didn't beat any plane I've ever been on (including business class, never flown first) have been trips on the Seoul subway system during rush hour, when I've gotten stuck next to the old people seats, and they've got that rancid BO you get from eating too much kimchi for too long. It doesn't even smell like kimchi.

No severe pressure changes, fresher air, less bullshit at a train station than an airport, cheaper, smoother, usually more leg room. If you have a choice, take a train. If you can take a bullet train, there's no contest.

None of them thrill me particularly. Short haul is obviously worse. Had a nice United Airlines flight to Washington from London in November, brand spanking new plane, v comfy, was a tattier one on the way back :-(

Worst was an Astreaus (sp) flight to Malta, was utter hell.

Find the Short Haulers (in particularly EasyJet) really quite good, never had any probs and let's face it, you get what you pay for, unlike BMI or BA who treat you like cattle and charge you twice the price, past reputation getting both of those through some tricky times I fancy.

As a rule, I prefer the train, but it's usually more expensive and takes longer, plus there tend to be more old people and children, near of which I find particularly fascinating.

The service on virgin is much better than the service provided in flight by ba. This thought is shared by me and the majority of my friends.
Ba seem to have deteriorated over the past few years, which is a shame as they used to be excellent.
Other good airlines are singapore and emirates.
Virgin trains between london and manchester aren't too bad, although i don't use the service very regularly. But they are clean and have good legroom.

Emerites are a Fantastic airline and Virgin. The service is a 1000% times better than BA who have gone down hill very rapidly over the past few years.

The best is Air New Zealand. Clean, efficient, flight attendants friendly, great food. Perfect way to fly. The worst has got to be Easy Jet. I know it's cheap but come on.....

I have used Jet2 for short haul flights to Spain and found them reliably on time, clean and efficient. Best to take own food but there is adequate selection of soup, sandwiches etc. it you want. Much better than Ryanair.I have used all the charter flights over the years and found them no better than Jet 2, but much more expensive.
