Hi there...corpophagia (poop eating) isn't normal at all. However there are many dogs who eat their own poop as well as cats feces and there are various possibilties which the medical community speculates as a cause such as dietary deficiencies, boredom, etc. It can cause bowel distresses over the long term therefore it's important to learn how to prevent this. Some ideas are to use a cat litter box with a cover and face the opening of the box against a wall so that the dog cannot wedge betwen the entrance of the box and continue to eat the poop (aka kitty almond roca).

I love dogs, but my god they can be so gross sometimes. I had a little dog that would do this, just thinking about it kind makes me a little nauseous. I prevented it with her and my current dog with a hooded litter box. Not just covered, but a hood that comes out over the front of the box so kitty has to go under and then up into the box. Its literally impossible for the dog to get in there unless he knocks the lid off completely. But then I suppose that it could be rigged with zip ties or something. The Booda Dome litter box has worked well too. It costs about thirty dollars, but is well worth it. The box itself is round, the cat has to go through a small tunnel and around the corner to get in. Its not as complicated as it sounds, just hard to describe. Go to the Petco website, you could probably find a picture of it. As far as nutritional deficiency goes, thats not an excuse to eat cat poop, get some vitamins.

I know how you feel my dog used to use the litter trays as a kind of buffet, but now I shut her in the kitchen when she is on her own, so she cant get to them, even if I just go upstairs for a minute, she seems to have got out of the habit now.

A lot of dogs do this and it's not really good for them. You should try and keep the litterbox away from where the dog can get at it. Try one of those boxes with the lid on it and turn it so that it is facing a wall and only the cat can get in or install a cat door in the room where the littler box is.

BLERRGH! It can't be doing him any favours! Cat sh*t is The worst smelling out of ALL sh*ts! (well, I think so anyway) Try to remove the poop straight away, if that's not possible, keep your dog in a different room to the litter tray until you can remove it. Good luck!!

It's not harmfull dogs have a far superior immune system than ours as your dog has demonstrated.I had 2 German Shepards and a little petite female cat and for years never had to clean her poo up look on the positive side even if it is slightly gross

When my Dachshund was a puppy, she kept eating her poo. Vet said it was lack of iron so we gave her iron supplements. After some time, she didn't bother eating her poo anymore. In the meantime while your dog is taking iron supplements, clean up the litter box when you see that it's dirty.

Dogs are disgusting...
It's only harmful if he's eating the pooh out of a cat tray that has clay or crystals - usual kitty litter stuff. If he's digging it out of the garden then it's fine.

Isn't that a sign of motherhood. When I was younger my mum and dads dog ate her puppies poo, the vet said, it was what mum dogs do and was a sign of motherhood, on a similar sense to that when cats bring birds and mice back there are gifts of respect to their owners. I think your dog may feel she is somewhat responsible for the welfare of your kittens and is therefore eating their poo.
