We just lost our 3 yr old labrador suddenly 1 1/2 weeks ago and we will be wanting to get a new puppy but one that stays small. I am from Australia so what are some good breeds that are avilable here.
I am 15 and usually at home when im not at school or at work(once aweek) but my mum is always at home, so there is always somebody there.
We want a small dog that stays small and does have very long hair (that requires much grooming).
We also don't want to pay a fortune so under $260 aussie dollars.
We like the look of a pomm x aussie terrior, but we want suggestions!!!!

And also what can I do to speed up the process of getting a new puppy. My mum does want a new dog but she is saying not just yet. How can i try to convince her to get one soon.
I am a big pet lover so is my family.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
ALL WILL BE APPRECIATED.

I am in Australia and personally love the Australian Kelpie. I suggest taking your mum to the RSPCA and I bet you come home with a dog.. there are hundreds of puppies and older dogs that need homes. They cost approx $250 and come all injections to date, wormed, flea treated and de sexed... They have big ones, long haired ones, short haired ones and male or female... go take your pick (and you might just find that the dog picks you)

Sorry about your Lab, :( so sad

Be very careful in the switch from big dog to small dog. You will be expecting a small dog to do the same things that your big dog did. Smaller dogs take more attention in training. One has a tendency to pamper a small dog more, where a bigger dog they will "play" with more. They are both equally great as companions though. I have a small Yorkie. He has been the best dog for my four children, they dress him in doll clothes, fight over who gets to sleep with him and in general spend a lot of time with him. On the other hand my chocolate lab just died a month ago, and it is I that misses her the most. She was more of a trained dog and always did everything with me. Our Yorkie does not do any tricks and the only obedience "thing" he does is "sit". Both sizes are great to have, it will just take getting used to a new one.
If you want your Mom to get a new puppy, just have her go see a new litter of pups! No one can resist a real LIVE new baby!!!!! Tell her that you just want to see them, and I bet you may come home with a new dog!

Im so sorry to hear about your lab. I currently own a yellow lab and my family decided to get a small dog also. We researched breeds and we decided on a Rat Terrier. We got a little girl and she is such a joy. Very protective, gets along great with other animals and the kids. She will only be 10lbs as an adult. Not this is the minature version. You can get the standard which is up to 35lbs.
Go to puppyfinders.com and check out the breed. It will give you information on it and breeders. They are considered a rare breed so you will definately be an origonal owning one! Grooming is so easy. Short hair and barely sheds.
Good luck on your pet search. Just remember to take your time and don't rush finding one. Make sure you heal before buying another one.

I have a Cairn Terrier, as do my parents, and I can vouch that they are a GREAT dog! They are like a lab in a small dogs body-- atleast mine is! He loves going to the lake, he will hunt any animals (he LOVES squirrels), and he is the most loyal dog ever. Females usually are around 13-15 pounds, and Males around 16-20. They are very sturdy dogs, and do have long hair, although they do not shed. They have a very long life expectantcy (15-17 years) have little to no health problems besides seasonal allergies (which varies from dog to dog).

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. Then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, pets are family in my household. I have a Jack Russel Terrier and she is very lovable, I recommend this breed. They are a very good lap dog and have short hair. A very good friendly watch dog also. It is a good dog for a household that will have someone there because they are very active, in a good way. I wouldn't give mine up for the world.
If your mom says she wants another puppy, I would go ahead and surprise her with one. You could check with your vet. They usually know breeders and you know you will get a healthy pup that way. Good luck with your search.

Yorkshire Terriers (Yorkies) stay under 7 pounds. Mine is 4.5 pounds and is full grown. His hair is like human hair and does not shed. We groom him ourselves. He loves to be held and brushing him is just another part of holding him.

why don't you try the animal welfare league or rspca, we got our purebred jacket russell from there. He cost $110, desexed and wormed.
There are always a lot of dogs looking for a loving home, and i'm sure it would help with the healing process with the lost of your much loved labrador.
good luck!!
