I PLAN TO GO TO SANTA BARBARA SOMETIME THIS YEAR AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE TRAVELED WITH AMTRAK TO SANTA BARBARA BEFORE. I'VE READ SOME SITES THAT SAYS ONCE YOU GET THERE ..EVERYTHING IS WALKING DISTANCE (BEACH,SHOPPING ETC). I JUST WANT A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION AND ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE ALSO WELCOME. THANKS!

I just took a day trip this year with two friends. We had a blast. The station is central to the beach and shopping ( think 3rd st Promenade in Santa Monica) everything is within walking distance, so I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes. The train ride it self was fun, but I would suggest that you bring a magazine, playing cards, or ipod to keep your self entertained (we played hang-man on a cocktail napkin -lol-) Also bring a small lunch would be good too, Amtrack does offer snack & lunch, but it's best to save your $. And don't forget to bring your camera!!
Have fun!!! :o)
P.S I forgot to mention, they will asighn you a seat, but once the train gets going you can sit in the upper deck, where you get a fantastic view and you and your party can all sit together at a table or the individual seat that face the view.

Santa Barbara is beautiful and yes Amtrak will drop you off where a car will not be necessary. You will be to walk and shop all day for many days. Eating in Santa Barbara is always a pleasure, they have some awesome resturants.
The Santa Barbara Zoo is a really cool thing to check out. It sits right on the Pacific Ocean..
Santa Barbara sits right on the beach so there's no worries there.
You can even rent a sail boat for the day, you'll have a blast.
Nighttime can be a little iffy, not too many clubs/bars, but they are out there, mostly on Santa Barbara's little side streets.
Type Santa Barbara California into your search engine for a list of nice/affordable places to stay.. Stay away from the Sandman Motel.- - They have a 3 story Border's Books and Music right on State Street, I love that place.
Hope this helps, have fun

yes, the train is pretty good, usually on schedule and the Santa Barbara station is very close to the shops and the beach. THe only time you might need a car is to get a your hotle, surprisingly there are not many in the area and be warened that most do not have A/C. The ones on the beach are expensive for what you get, but if you don't need A/C and a buffet breakfast yo should be fine. THe trolleys run every 15 minuites or so if you wantto go to the little zoo or the farther hotels.

Amtrak leaves Union Station in L.A. (depart your automobile at homestead and take the subway there) and arrives marvelous downtown in S.B., merely steps removed from the coastline. You surprisingly plenty turn left, and you're there. Take the Surfliner (which will run on the edge of on time) extremely than the Coast Starlight (that's infamous for being VERY overdue). The component of Santa Barbara travelers might decide to work out is relatively compact, and it is all particularly on the edge of the practice station.
