It depends on your situation. If all you have is a W-2 and maybe a mortgage and property taxes then you can do it on your computer at www.irs.gov. Click on the efile icon on the left hand side. you may qualify for free filing.
If you have dependents, you may wish to utilize one of the chain store preparers.
Anything more complex and you should at least consider a CPA. Contrary to the previous answer, CPA firms (and Block etc) are not a rip-off. We offer our time, experience and expertise to ensure that your return is correct and complete and to ensure that you claim all the deductions you are entitled to. All the off-the-shelf software programs (and their online counterparts) have their limitations. They cannot take account of every situation.CPAs use more sophisticated programs which allows an expert in tax law to change the boxes when necessary. Of course, turbotax and the like can hardly let you do that. It would be chaos. So they gear themselves to producing simple returns accurately.

If you return is simple, do it at home.
If you expect to owe money, do it at home (there's no incentive to e-file and pay the hefty fee).
If you have a business, rental property, a lot of investments or anything else that makes taxes complex, you need to visit one of the tax services. The Block and Jackson are both decent.
If you are due a large refund, you might be worth your while to go to a tax service and just get it now.
Personally, I'm a tightwad. I would never pay anyone to do my taxes for me, even if I had no idea what I was doing. I think it's a ripoff.

H&R Block in most circumstances. If they're VERY simple, do them yourself.
