the Desiderata is wise, and the world would be a vastly better place if all followed it's direction.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

What you're saying, as I understand you, is why can't all roads lead to Rome? Why can't we just worship God any way we wish
? I live in Los Angeles. If I take the 10 freeway I can drive straight to Phoenix. In essence, what you are asking is why do I have to take the 10 freeway to get to Phoenix? Why can't I just take any freeway? Because all the other freeways do not lead to Phoenix. If you want to get to heaven you had better make sure all religions lead to heaven. Here's what christianity says. God is a Holy, Righteous God who can have nothing to do with sin. Even though he loves all sinners and wants all of them to be with him in heaven, no matter how bad they were on earth, it is impossible for a Perfectly, Holy, Righteous God to allow sin in his presence. So he sent his only Son Jesus Christ to pay for the sins of the world so the most vile sinners the world has ever known would still have a chance to go to heaven if they accepted his pardon and turned their life over to Christ. Do you know for a fact that what I just described about God is not true? Let's just suppose it is true. In that case, the other ways wouldn't work. What good would buddhism, Islam, hinduism and so on do since neither Buddha, nor Mohammad, nor Krishna nor any of the rest of the religious leaders died for your sins or even claimed to. You can worship God any way you want just as you can get on any freeway and drive hoping to get to Phoenix. But you better make sure that freeway goes to Phoenix. I, personally, don't believe the old smorgasborg view of religions which is what you're espousing. It's the idea that you just pick whatever religion you want, they're all the same. Actually, all religions diametrically contradict all other religions and they all say they are coming from God. Logically, the law of non-contradiction just leaves us 2 choices here:1) one is true and all the rest are false 2) they're all false(that has to be considered a logical possibility). But the one option that's not possible is that they are all true(not if they all contradict each other).
Let's just pick two of them, Christianity and Islam. Christianity says that Jesus Christ died 2000 years ago on a cross and that's written in their Holy book, the Bible which they say is coming from God. Islam says Jesus Christ did not die on a cross 2000 years ago and that's written in their Holy book the Koran(which they also say is coming from God). My question is, what actually happened 2000 years ago? You can't have it both ways. Either he did die on a cross or he didn't die on a cross. If he did then Islam is not a true revelation from God because Islam says he didn't die on a cross(can God be wrong?). If he didn't die on a cross than christianity is wrong. You could do that for every other religion because they all diametrically contradict each other. Why follow a religion that is not a true revelation of God. If you think just any religion will lead to God, then here, I have one for your. I say that God is the spaghetti monster who lives on mars and eats strawberry shortcake all day long. If you accept all religions why don't you accept that one?
You just have to examine the Holy books for the big religions and see if they have any evidense of coming from God. I've done that and I have become convinced that the Bible does have that signature of God and that christianity is the true way. You may not agree and you have every right to disagree but please don't waste your time with the all roads lead to Rome view. All roads don't lead to your mothers house. Just get in your car and try it sometime(driving to your mothers house by taking any road).

Politically correct, but wrong. We don't get to choose who God Is; God already IS, and has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ.
