I find myself squinting at the screen like an old woman trying to decipher what has been written. It takes 1 second more to write 'you' instead of 'u'.

Am I getting old and should we put up with the destruction of our beautiful language, or are there just too many lazy people out there?

I'm with you, I hate it. I can vaguely understand it if you are texting and can't work the predictive text facility on your phone but on e mail it's really really annoying. My niece does it all the time writing da instead of the. But you know what really gets up my nose even more and frankly I can't see the point of it when people replace an s with a z. OK I know, I'm English and some words the americans spell differently but I read a question once where the girl had written friendz. I mean why? what is the point? that can't be a genuine mistake unless she's a total dingbat and it doesn't even save any time or effort.

If you're getting old I must be too. Thank you for the opportunity to have a little spout about it because it's my pet hate as well.

While text talk may be necessary when sending a text on a mobile telephone, there is no excuse for using it when typing with a computer keyboard.

I think the roots are in the destruction of our education system that was started by the introduction of the comprehensive system in the late sixties.

The extensive use of text talk provides a convenient mask for those who are incapable or too lazy to use basic English.

I dislike texting due to the keys I don't like having to press a key 3 times just to bring up a letter wouldn't be too bad if mobiles had a mini qwerty pad instead but saying that I still prefer to talk.

Hope this helps

I completely agree with you! I hate text talk, there is simply no need for it, even when I write a text I still write properly, so what if it costs me 10p extra to send another message. I love the English language and it shouldn't be compromised.

i so agree with you! maybe i'm getting old myself but i can't see the point of not using proper english when writing a text (not as in text message). i also worry about what it does to young people's spelling skills, unless of course they compensate by reading books etc. also, as you pointed out, it's hard for old folks like us to decipher what's been said, so it's inconsiderate in a way. there's a time and place for everything!

Too many lazy people. Personally, I don't respond to anything texted. If they want an answer they can leave a voice mail or an e-mail in plain English.

It's really difficult to read if, like me, you are slightly dyslexic. I try really hard to spell everything properly, as it's the only way I can understand it! It's fine if you're on texting on the phone, but when it creeps into 'real' life it makes it very hard. I've even heard of job applications starting with, "I wud like 2 work 4 u bcz..." Straight in the bin I feel!

It's completely annoying and idiotic. What is worse though is when people used text talk in other places than on their mobiles like on here for instance, just shows how lazy and ignorant they are.

It think the texttalk and the act of text messaging both equally worthless. On top of it, using the little keyboards can lead to orthopaedic problems. I have text turned off on my phone. Anyone who knows me knows not to waste the time. I like it that way.
