I thought that question asked if you believe in Jesus Christ, but i have been told that it really asks if you are protestant.

Religiously uneducated people will ask if you are Christian if they want to know just if you are a believer in God. When you go deeper in this meaning, it is asking if you are "of Christ". Religious people will want to know if you are a "Christian" which is a believer in Jesus Christ the Son of God.

No, being a Christian means that you are a person who believes that Christ is your God and Saviour. That is why it comes from the root word Christ. Being a Protestant means you are also a Christian. But you have to look at the history of Protestants. Luther started the movement because he was unsatisfied with the Catholic Church. Protestants came from the group of Catholics who defected to a new religion. There are lots of Christian sects and Protestantism and Catholicism are part of it.

No. If you believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God then you are a Christian. Protestant is a sub-category of Christian.

Depends on the area I guess...In my country the majority is Christian and if somebody asks you,that means that either you show discernible signs of belonging to some other religion or he just wants to start a conversation on the topic of Christianity,God,religion and such stuff.

It does mean whether u have accepted Jesus as your God, and if you have accepted Him you will automatically follow His ten commandments, and one of the command is " Do not worship any other Gods : So decide it yourself. Are you a christian?

I was taught ..Christian means to believe That Jesus is the son of God....I believe, This is what I was taught and God made me ...now there is so much Scientology about My savior and God has touched me in my life...and no Scientology will explain...God is here and with us , this is why you become paranoid . or scared or any emotion. believe what your grandma taught you and carry that over to your kids ....
