Tusks are used to dig for water, salt, and roots; to debark trees, to eat the bark; to dig into baobab trees to get at the pulp inside; and to move trees and branches when clearing a path. In addition, they are used for marking trees to establish territory and occasionally as weapons.
If you will take them away the elephant will not be able to survive.

There was an article long ago proclaiming the observance of a phenotype shift that there were more and more tusk-less/reduced tusked elephants in Angola during the civil war (lasted like 25 years and often poaching is fueled by war).
Most recent management plans have promise that if villages are allowed to sell hunting permits (based on scientific population studies) and profit from the elephants, they are best protected this way

It is like removing your teeth and nails, how will you fend for yourself. Well you are human with much better thinking and mind and will surely be able to take out the sollution but what about these poor animals? How do you think they will be able to fare if you remove their important organs which they need to live.
We cannot think of removing the tusk of elephent or horn of rhino but what needs to be done is educate our people and ask them not to hurt the animals. Indian culture used to give equal importance to all living being and now we are loosing this intricate and important part of our culture. We need to revive this and remember we will not be able to survive without the wildlife.

If you could flood the market with ivory you would have no demand for the product and it will loose its value, but this means that you would have to cull a certain amount of elephant (like places in the kruger park where they are way to many and destroying habitats of other animals). The minute you flood the market every piece of ivory will loose its value as you will not have to come by ivory illegally... It won't even be necessary to hunt cull to many elephants as places like the Kruger park have tons and tons of the stuff in storage as they confiscated from poachers, but instead they burn tons and tons of the stuff, ivory they could've sold to flood the market and make profits off of it in order to fund anti - poaching movements.

because elephants and rhinos need their tusks and horns for protection and showing off to the ladies. why do u think they have it in the first place?? bull elephant with no tusks = no female elephant to show off to. rhino with no horn = somewhat easier target for its enemy's. read up on what those weapons are used for in the elephant and rhino world.
