and he sucks on us as though he is nursing! how do we get him to stop?

we have tried thumping his nose lightly, and telling him no it doesn't work

even when we push him away he just comes back and tries again!

we also have his sister from the same litter and she is normal (if there is such a thing when it comes to cats)

This one you may have to ask your vet about, and many of the vets today can refer you to an animal behavior specialist. I know WHY he is doing this---it is because he was taken away from his mommy too soon. I had a wonderful male orange tabby kitten who went around most of the time with a wet tail. I KNEW that he loved playing in the water in the toilet and (silly, me) I thought that somehow he was dragging his tail in the toilet. NOT! As I observed him going to sleep several times, he was sucking on his tail! As he matured, this behavior came to an end. You may want to go to www.catfancy.com and under "Ask the Vet" you may find some suggestions. Cat Fancy is a GREAT magazine for all cat lovers, and you just may want to subscribe to it after you look up some questions and see all the good information that they have in there. And, NO-these people do NOT pay me to say this. I simply enjoy, and have learned so much thru that publication. Another thing you may want to try is: when he starts sucking on YOU, give him a few cat/kitten treats. You may have to try several different kinds before you find just the "right one" that tastes better than YOU do.
Good luck with this little guy, he will be fine and he will outgrow it.

Hi there...to discourage her from suckling consider a pet-friendly spray deterrent product called Grannick's Bitter Apple which contains a citrus scent http://www.grannicks.com found worldwide at most pet stores or a dab of vinegar. Some cats grow out of the suckling whereas others do not and sometimes we need to help intervene if they do not appear to be outgrowing the behaviour. Suckling behaviours sometimes is more commonly seen among cats who have been weaned too early or earlier than they were ready.

He absolutely adores you, maybe just give him a light spray with water when he does it, or give him a special toy that hopefully he falls in love with.
