you require codecs in every case to compress RAW VIDEO,

at the most basic, you're looking at compressing into MPEG video, if not MPEG4 , DivX / XviD offer better quality to size ratios.

try this
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/
and install, just so you can use the ffdshow video codec
http://www.cccp-project.net/

you're looking to reduce bitrate
first go to Streams > Stream List , and highlight the audio stream and click demux, save it to a place on your harddrive

you may want to encode this audio stream into mp3, so use winlame:
http://winlame.sourceforge.net/

about the video, it may take hours, depending on the duration of your video. click on Video > Compression
choose ffdshow Video Codec , click configure

and in the drop down menu for Encoder
select MPEG 1 (you can choose DivX/XviD in other cases, but we'll stick to mpeg)

and this is where the Bitrate comes in play, this governs the total size of your video, i'd recommend ~800 or 900 kbits

when you're done press ok,

then go to File > Save As, (leave it on avi)

after it's done encoding, reopen the new smaller video
then go to Streams > Stream list > Add > and browse up the mp3 encoded audio track

then go to save as again

if you are just wanting to compress them to make space or transfer easier....try winzip or winrar programs....no need or ability to use codecs there.... sometimes the burning software has compression ratio's that you can change in the option / settings of that programs..... if you need codecs you can do a google for k-lite mega codec package and it will download a buttload of codecs from avi to mpeg4

Um....not to argue symantecs here, but codec is short for COmpression/DECompression. You cannot do any sort of compression or decompression without a codec.
Even .zip is a codec.
You could try windows movie maker (comes free with Me/XP)
to compress the vids.

attempt MediaCoder.... it truly is the perfect device accessible for what you're searching for..... MediaCoder is a loose wide-spread batch media transcoder, which properly integrates maximum prevalent audio/video formats and equipment into an all-in-one answer.
