the other day my 7 yr old daughter came in from playing outside. she was crying and i asked what was wrong. she told me that there was a man in our yard who took a rope and choked alley-cat(a stray that lives in our yard) untill her neck was bloody then he droped the cat and my daughter came in the house. she said she went back outside to check on the cat and found her dead so my daughter burried her. the man was waiting by the side of the house for her to come close to him but she got scared and came inside.

we asked her who this guy was and what he looked like and she said he had black hair, brown boots and blue shorts he wasn't wearing anything else (it is winter!) when we pressed her further she said he is invisable and only she can see him. now i nkow she made the whole story up. what i don't know is how to react to this or why she would say such a thing.

any suggestions/advice?

p.s. the cat is fine!

You need to explain to her about the boy who cryed wolf...lying isn't a good thing especially about something of this nature. This is serious. My son is totally freaked because he thinks everyday someone is going to kidnap him after he saw a news broadcast. One day I made him walk to his grandma's after school and he made up a story that some guy tried to take him away. He had a description and all. We called the police and they came and talked to him. He had perfectly described his uncle who lives in another state and happened to be at work when this supposably took place. I sat him down and told him about the story and things have been much better since. Good luck!

some kids like to make up stuff to get a reaction. I knew a girl (also 7)who was hysterical at school one day saying her dad was moving overseas and taking her brother with him. The teacher called the mum to see if their was anything she could do only to be told it was not true. This girl had worked herself up into hysteria all over a made up lie. You know the mums reaction....she laughed and said she did the same as a child. I have to say I was pretty shocked. If it was my child I would be looking into it further on why she felt she needed to do this. I mean this story your daughter made up was pretty gruesome. But then again I worry too much.

You need to ask her why she made it up. Is there some kind of drama going on at your house, like a divorce/remarriage, new baby, new house, new caregiver? Problems at school? Sometimes kids, when they are feeling scared, or not getting enough attention will act up. Examine things around the house. Check your local Registered Sex Offender list online and see if there is one in your area. Is it possible that she COULD have been molested and this is her way of telling you?
