The original loveseats sat two -facing opposite directions! The backrest was an S-shape, to ensure the bodies of the lovers didn't touch -which would have been scandalous! They could still lean over the center section to kiss or embrace, though. Then the early ones with both sides facing the same direction still had a barrier between them. Oh, for the good old days!

A sofa has three place/butt cushions (spaces to sit on). Loveseat obviously has two.

A sofa sits two people side by side, both facing the same way. A love seat is S shaped and has people sitting side by side, only they face the opposite way from each other, eg: right shoulder next to the other persons right shoulder.

I dont think there is a difference..I think different people just call it differen things.If there is any difference the only thing i could think of is the couch is bigger than a sofa?
