DON'T PANIC.
You know, the best thing you can do for your little cat right now, is to stay calm. He will pick up on you stressing and it will affect his mood too.
You could try very gently bathing it in some saline solution (mix some cooking salt with some warm tap water) and gently flush his eye with it. I wouldn't open his eye lids to do this, in case it does more damage. Just run it over the outsides of his lids.
In any case, bathing the eye will remove the discharge and make him more comfortable.
If you are sitting up with him, probably best to sit somewhere quiet and dark. Light might irritate his eye further. Give him lots of cuddles and kisses, and reassure the little guy.
I doubt that it will be something that will cause blindness, eye infections (if that's what it is) are usually easily treated. Get him to a vet ASAP in the morning, both for his sake, and yours.
Relax. Good luck.
Heidi.

There's nothing you can really do. You don't have any ointment.
Get a CLEAN cloth, and soak it with WARM water. Make sure it's warm, not too hot. Ring it out so it's not dripping with water and VERY GENTLY dab the kittens eye. It'll help make it a little bit more sootheing as well as get rid of some of the discharge. Depending how badly it's swollen, it could help the kitten open it's eye.
The kitten could be allergic to something, which could cause the swelling. It could be your average eye infection, which can be treated with ointment that's very simple to put in the eye - ask your vet for proper handleing while doing this. I work in an animal shelter - eye ointment is the easiest form of oral medication to give, giving you know how to properly handle the cat. =)

If you have any camomile tea, make a pot and then bathe the eye with the tea after it cools (don't put anything in it like sugar or cream) It is one of the best naturopathic medicines for eye problems. The camomile plant has many therapeutic qualities. Soak a small cloth or the end of a facecloth in the tea and swab over the eye area. You don't need to try and pry the eye open, just use enough liquid that it will get into the eye. Might be a little messy but its worth it. If you have to wait until later in the day to take him to the vet, you can do this a couple more times.

Number one, you must calm down!
If this has been going on for several days, your kitten probably has an infection - get him to the doctor first thing in the morning.
If this condition is new to the hour, your kitten has bumped his eye or gotten something in it. You can try using a product like pure saline to wash the eye out and perhaps provide a little comfort. You can also use a cool, damp washcloth to wipe the area around and over the eye - be gentle. Your kitten will be ok overnight - reasess the situation in the morning - he may not even need vet care. (honestly he may just have a hair in his eye)
But like I said, first things first, CALM DOWN. Your kitten is not going to go blind in the 5-6 hours you have before the vet's office opens.

I would definitely try to irrigate it with some water and just try to keep it clean until you could get the little guy to the vet. I know it's scary but your baby is counting on you to get him through this. You must stay calm. Take note and write down this and any other symptoms you may notice. Particularly: how is his mood, is he still playful even though his eye is not doing well? Is he walking around in circles or exhibiting any unusual behavior? Record it all, brave one. I have an overnight vet down here in Indianapolis. I bet you got one nearby, too. Also try to call your vet and see if they or anyone they know of has an overnight service so you're prepared next time. When you get the number put it on your fridge with a magnet. I hope the little guy will be okay. Help him first, panic afterward.

Keep it moistened with warm water only until morning when you can get her into your vets office. PLEASE--don't panic!! Your cat will sense your nervousness. I assume this just broke out tonight, and I also assume that this IS an eye infection (that she most probably did herself, just by scratching too hard). She's NOT going to go blind overnight. Just try to stay calm, keep kitty calm, and don't let her scratch at it. If she does, you may have to wrap her L. paw up in gauze bandaging. If you do not have anything like this, you can cut a clean (old) wash cloth in 1/2 and secure it to her with a light tape, like masking tape. Also, make a call--if you haven't already, to your vets office and have the answering service give the Dr. a message that this is URGENT and to please call you ASAP. I wish you all the best, and she's going to be fine--you only have a couple more hours to wait. Good luck

Alright...you must take him to the vet...but it would cost you a fortune to get one this time of night...there are emergency vets that will help. Try this first...boiled water..let it cool some...take cotten and try to just wash the eye a little bit...this will just keep it clean. Try and get some kind of hard paper or cardboard and make a funnel and put it around his neck so he can scratch it...or wrap the paws in some kind of cloth...maybe a sock so the nails cant go into the eye...he is probably making it worse himself. I am sure you have seen those funnel things around pets neck that prevents them from touching their faces...I dont know what you can use to make it out of...maybe a cut up cardboard box. Lastly if it is 3am in the morning you probably have gotten no sleep at all...its only about 5 more hours till morning when you can get a vet. Try calling the animal shelter...see if they answer and ask them if there is any emergency vets on call...but try what I said first.

Take a paper towel and get it moist with either chamomille tea or plain water.
Dab/ wipe the eye from the outside in.
If you do it the other way you will wipe it back into the eye.
The inside of the eye has tearducts that try to flush foreign objects and bacteria out.
So since you are worried , do that, it will help...dab and wipe...tea or water and take it to vet once you are able to for some ointment and or antibiotics
It most likely won't go blind

Wow, I can't believe this. The exact same thing happened to my kitten a year ago. I thought it was going to die. Go to the clinic and just ask for some good eye drops and ointment. Your cat will not go blind. I have sinse seen TONS of little kittens with the same problem. Relax. My cat is now 1 year old, and his eye is 100% healed.

This happens a lot with little kittens. Just get a cotton ball and warm up some milk, dip the cotton ball in the milk and rub from the outer corner to the inside of the eye. Do this several times a day always with new milk and cotton. You will see improvement in a couple days.
