so far i've found a bunch of programs that can either convert a dvd into a mp4 file and a bunch of programs that can convert an mpeg/avi/other movie file into mp4 but so far no programs that can do both... am i searching for the wrong things, is this search useless? ultimately i just want to be able to convert all my video files so that it is in a format compatible with my Zune.

There's a program by River Past called Crazi Video for iPod that converts DVD .vob files, mpeg/avi and a lot more file types into .mp4 files. I know the title is for iPod, but if Zune does .mp4, this should work perfectly fine, because iPod only allows importing of .mp4 files too. Crazy thing is you're going to have to register for this program, but I'm sure you can find ways past that.

i like to recommend you a DVD Ripper. it would want to somewhat rip DVD to MP4, H.264, AVI, MP3, WMV, WMA, FLV, MKV, MPEG-a million, MPEG-2, 3GP, 3GPP, VOB, DivX, Mov, RM, RMVB, M4A, AAC, WAV, and so on. with large quick DVD ripping % and perfect photo and sound high quality. It can also edit the DVD video clips, which incorporates trim a video clip, crop the action picture, merge various titles or chapters into one record and so on. desire can help you!

OK,
haven't you just solved your question? you've found programs to convert DVD .vobs to .mp4 as well as video formats to .mp4, so what's your problem?

i doubt you'll find an all-in-one solution for DVD-ripping, as a DVD needs to be decrypted (DVDdecryptor, etc) to extract it's .vob files and from there, you can re-encode it

It's basically a multi-step process, so you'll always have to stick to using a couple of programs, 1 to extract, then 1 to re-encode, or if you have an avi/mpeg by itself, just to re-encode

i'd recommend using IMTOO mpeg encoder 3, which supports a huge range of formats, including DVD .vobs and converting them to whatever format you like, which includes .mp4.

if you're *cough*shady*cough*, google can help you to register as it's not freeware

This program will do it.

I have used their other product WinAVI Video Converter and it works great.

It costs $25 and should do exactly what you want. It also has a trial download so you can verify it's claims.
