Starts with finding the right person.
Depends heavily on not being irrational or emotional during a conflict as well. Fight fair, in other words. Listen to what the other person is saying to understand what the problem is an make a serious effort to actually address that problem. Also, be willing to admit if you are wrong or misunderstood something. If you are deceptive or stubborn, you are inviting continued conflict.

communication,trust,honesty and respect
the communication should be open at all times. those 2 people should feel comfortable to be able to tell thier partner anything.
you should call maybe once or twice a day....
sending a SMS at the beggining of the day is always nice.

Once a day you send things. Like hope you are having a wonderful day. Talk to them about everything even the little stuff. Do things to make them feel special. Be faithful, truthful, trusting person.
