The licking of the paws or chewing of the paws is usually a result from food allergies.
If you are feeding a dog food that is full of fillers like corn, soy and beet pulp this can very possibly be the cause.
The corn and grain in the food is the biggest contributor for food allergies.
canidae, solid gold, california natural, innova are a few really good ALL natural foods that are healthy for your dog.

yes, shih tzu's as a breed usually have problems with their skin, including the skin in their paws. If it is what i think you are talking about your pup might have a slight skin infection that's kind of like atheletes foot. you can ask your vet for some cream. In the future with your pet, another skin problem that might occur is "hot spots" and those are feverish, red, scratchy, scaly patches that are usally found on the back of the animal around the area where the tail settles when it curls up (if your tzu mix's tail curls), they too are nothing major, just a skin condition that you might compare to eczema, they itch, and they aggrivate, but they do not endanger. Just try and be on the lookout for these things, and ask your vet if you need more info.

When dogs lick their paws like that it usually is related to a food allergy and typically an allergy to grain. Switch to a high quality food that doesn't have grain within the first three ingredients. It's tough to find good quality food I know. I just found out about a wonderful food called "by nature". It's in a green bag and I found it at Petsmart. Try switching and also giving your dog some veggies. If you simply blend up some frozen mixed veggies and put them over his food (warm not frozen) that will improve his coat quality as well as overall health.

It may be due to the food that you're feeding him.
It may be due to the cleaning detergent you are using to clean the floors in the house.
You may want to try to feed him fish foods and potatoes. Recommend you, Solid Gold, Holistic Blendz. Feed him evening primrose oil capsules for shinny coat and healthy skin.
You may wish to reduce his walks as it may due to the grass. Hope this helps!

He could be acting out - is he stressed in any way? Left alone abit, does he suffer from separation anxiety? A friend's dog does this exact same thing, and it was because she was fearing my friend leaving her every day for work

He could have a fungus infection that you can't see. Take him to the vet for a check-up, otherwise it sounds like you have a very tidy dog.
