5 minutes ago i posted a question about how excess sodium may harm a human, most answers included increase in blood pressure. but I believed that sodium is an ion therefore it would be much easier for the body to excrete this through the urine, so does that mean that sodium is not excreted through urine, or too much water is needed to excrete all of the sodium or if all of the urine is excreted, then why does it still have these effects on the body?

Before sodiom can be excreted through urine it passes through you body in the blood, as it passes through the body it harms the blood vessels and organs. Each cell operates through osmosis (you may rmember this from HS bio) when there is more salt outside the cell then inside the cell absorbs the salt until the concentration inside is the same as outside, too much salt will harm the cell. The salt will only be flushed out when there is more water in your body so there is more water in the blood stream.

If we eat too much salt we are usually very thirsty and drink so much water, some of which is retained by the body.

When the body retains too much fluid, it puts a lot of pressure on the heart, lungs and kidneys.

Legs will fill with fluid (oedema), the lungs will fill with fluid causing pulmonary oedema and put considerable strain on the heart, causing extremely high blood pressure.

The person will feel extremely ill, gain weight and need medical treatment.

sodium doesn't cause stones. it can cause high blood pressure which hurts your kidneys over time. this makes them bad at excreting sodium.
