If so, what for? How long were you there? What effect did it have on your life?

I haven't, but hold nothing against those who have. Living is basically illegal in the US. Those of use that have not served time just haven't been caught living. Our justice system is in tatters. We have more people in prison than any country in the world by a huge margin. Polls show that we trust our justice system right up there with congress. :) One of the worst crimes in the US is to be low income.

I spent the night in my local police department for driving under the influence. If I was actually drunk or impaired that would have been one thing and completely understandable (Driving drunk or impaired is very STUPID)
But, I was not drunk, impaired, or even stoned. I was tired and I have a disabilty that prevents me from walking. I do not drink alcohol. I told the cop this and when he asked me to do the field sobriety tests. I told him I physically can not do them. Well to make a long story short. I was arrested and taken to the police station where I was asked to take a breath test. I wanted a blood test (they are more accurate and there is less of a chance of the test being tampered with) but was told no. Fortunately I passed the test with a .00 BAC. Thinking, I would be let go after this, I was soon unpleasantly surprised when, I was placed into a jail cell and, not released until the following morning. My car was impounded and I had to pay big bucks to get it out.

There were no criminal charges filed but they still kept me overnight and treated me very badly.

I now have a lawsuit pending and have issued a formal complaint with the Attorney General. Someone is going to get fired over this and I hope spend sometime in jail.

I've been arrested 6 times ... but I've never actually served prison time. 3 "overnights" for possession of illegal substances and 3 "couple of hours"; 2 for fighting and 1 for shoplifting -- but those were all when I was a teenager. I was in the juvenile system for those. How did I manage not to go to prison for the others? I had a really great lawyer, I guess. None of this really taught me anything at the time, but its a big embarrassment when I look back on it. Changing my lifestyle and experiencing positive things has effected me more than any of those negative experiences did.

Jail: Yes. I visited a friend in jail. No real effect on my life.
Prison: Also, visited my cousin while she was in prison. No lasting life-changing effect on me there, either.

Did 6 months for burgulary/robbery. Just got out 3 weeks ago and am trying to start over but it's tough.

Missed out on my kid being born and now my ex doesn't want me to see him until my probation is done. Looking for a job but haven't got one yet - will be hard to get somebody to give me a chance.

I hated being there, locked up and awy from everyone and not being able to do the things I wanted. Being told what to do and when to do it. Not being able to have a beer, smoke, watch what I want to on TV, drive and everything else.

Back in court in a few weeks on another charge and unless I get things sorted I could be going back but hope not.

Yup. I go to the County jail 2-3 times every night. I don't stay long though. Just long enough to make a deposit. :)
