The first answerer is the one that needs to get a life. Why do idiots say stupid things like that? Sorry for my rant. I don't think 20 pounds is obese. I have two cats one of which is about 14 or so pounds. I once saw a cat that weighed 32 pounds. Talk about a fat cat. I think I'd put the fat cat in another room at feeding time so the others get some. Then don't let Zuessy have as much as usual. I don't think you mentioned how old he is.

The first poster is absolutely disgusting, ignorant, and immature. Ignore him/her.

I also have an overweight cat and I took him to the vet last week. This is what she said:

When buying canned food, look at the ingredients. The first and main ingredients listed should be some sort of real meat (chicken, lamb, fish, etc). If the main ingredient says meat-by products, then don't buy it. Cat food made from meat by-products are higher in fat and calories. Fancy Feast is a good one to buy. You'll also notice that Fancy Feast has a slightly smaller portion size. Feed him only ONE a day. Leave dry food out for him to munch on. Don't make the common error of only feeding him "meals" at certain times of the day. This can mess up their metabolism and make the problem worse. As far as dry food goes, check the ingredient list just like for the canned food. Also, buy a dry food that is either a Senior or Indoor formula. I know your cat isn't a senior and he may not be totally indoors, but these formulas always have less calories. And, most importantly, be sure your cat gets plenty of exercise. Just because he goes outside, doesn't mean he is actually exercising while he is out there.

Anyway, that was my vet's advice to me. I hope it helps.

Yes, cats can overeat. Overeating cat food will probably not have any consequences immediately, but the obesity should be addressed. There are few if any cats that are healthy-weight at 20lbs. In my sources, the first link can help you figure out where your cat falls in regards to his or her weight.

One of the best things you can do for obese cats is to remove all dry food from their diet. Cats are obligate carnovires which means they should only eat meat - not the grains found in dry food. You may be suprised to find that if you switched to a canned food that is free of grains, veggies, and fruits that your cat may slim down. The majority of adult cats do well eating 6-8oz of canned food per day.

It is possible for cats to overeat. Two of mine will binge till they make themselves sick. Offer him some grass if you can as it should act as a purgative(make him vomit). In future if possible feed him separately and slowly reduce the amount of food he gets to eat. Try playing with him to get him to run around and jump for 5-10 minutes daily. After a few weeks increase to 15 minutes and see how you both go. He should be okay in the mean time. Also it is dangerous and unhealthy for him to be this much overweight but do not worry too much just try to get him to lose even 4-5 pounds.Good luck.

OH NO! We have four cats! We have to separate one cat from the bunch, and feed her in the bathroom. Not only does she have to be feed alone, she can not eat dry food. She eats it so fast that she throws it back up almost immediately. If we let he out before the other cats are finished she will eat their food as well. You should separate the fat cat! And try to cut back on it's diet. I only give my cats 2 small cans a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. After a couple of months our fat cat is now healthy and lean!

Yes, cats can be overweight. I recommend that you take the cat to the vet and ask the vet's advice about what to do for your cat. And I'd say you should work out a feeding ritual to make sure that all of the cats are getting food -- he might be eating the others' food before they get a chance.

You really need to get this cat to your vet. This could be one/or a combination of more than one medical problem. My first guess would be low functioning thyroid gland. He will have to be tested for diabetes, too. At 1 yr. old he definitely should NOT be this obese. There IS a medical problem here that needs immediate attention. Don't wait around with this as it could be life-threatening. Good luck, I hope you get him the care he needs.

ignore the jerk above me who clearly is jealous of something!
(probably doesn't love anyone, but things!)

anyway. your cat could have diabetes! i would seriously watch her water intake. if she's drinking more water, thats a good sign.
otherwise, just put enough out for her in her own "space". it could be she's eating all that food cuz she just doesn't want to share with the rest.

as always if your not sure, take her to the vet.

good luck!
