I wear contacts. I also teach swimming lessons in a pool with a very hight chlorine content. The chlorine is making my eyes constantly itch and my eyelids are very thick. Am I developing some kind of allergy to chlorine? How can I get my eyes to stop itching? I wear goggles when I do laps, but I can't wear goggles because it sets a bad example for the kids.

Long periods of exposure to chlorine would irritate anyone's eyes. One thing that will help is to wear glasses instead of contacts. Try to keep your eyes out of the pool water. And maybe you can use some eye drops like Visine or something. I'm sorry this is bothering you so much.

What really sets a bad example to the kids is allowing yourself to become physically unwell for the insignificant benefit of another person. Let them know you've developed an allergic reaction to the chlorine in the water and need them, but remind them that up until now you hadn't needed them and they probably won't either.

the chlorine is breaking down the natural tear barrier on your eyes, when the contacts rub the raw eye it causes irritation. either take out the contacts or wear the goggles, theres no third option.
