Hi everyone, I have an 18 week old puppy who is a West Highland White Terrier weighing at 8 lbs. and she is very active and playful. Recently, I had an argument with my boyfriend about how much food to feed her considering the Purina One puppy bag says 1/2 to 1 and he only gives her 1/4 a cup 3 times a day. Is this enough or should I give her 1/2 a cup 3 times a day instead? She always seems to be hungry aftering eating and I once gave her a little extra and she ate all of it and seemed to still be hungry. Answers will be grealy appreciated!

I see you have clarified the question--

Again upgrade the dogs food to a QUALITY dog food. Nothing purina. It has corn, by-products and cheap, un-nutritious fillers. You will feed the dog less by buying a better food. Such as canidae (all-life stages, so he could eat this now) Merrick (also all-life stages) Wellness (all-life stages)...etc. Nothing you see in a grocery store should be good enough for your dog.

Remember that puppies are just that--hyper active running eating machines. The table on the bag is a guide, and should be adjusted to each individual dog. If you have any concerns with the amount he is or is not eating, it should be brought up with a vet

It would be best to ask your vet how much her breed should eat in a day. I'm getting a Bichon soon. The recommend amount per day is 1 cup.

If a bag of puppy food say 1/2 to 1 (I'm reading this as cups), it usual means that amount in a full day. A 1/4 cup, 3 times a day is 3/4 cup. That is within what the bag says. A 1/2 cup, 3 times a day, is 1 1/2 cups. That is more than recommended.

A dog will easily over eat. They will become over weight if you let them, and that will lead to health problems.

It sounds like she might need more food. But, keep in mind a lot of dogs will eat and eat until they throw up if you let them. If the food manufacturer recommends 1/2 to 1 cup 3 times a day, that is probably what you should be feeding her. Ask your vet. make sure you feed her good food not the cheap stuff from the market. Nutro and royal canin are good. You can get them at most pet stores.

You need to realize that dogs are pigs. It will keep eating as long as you keep putting food down. Most animals that don't have free food will quickly gulp up any food you put down because s/he isn't used to the food "always going to be there".

As far as the amount you feed it, I'd go with feed 2 cups in the morning, and 2 cups at night. I work in an animal shelter & thats our standard puppy feeding. If you feel the dog needs to put on more weight, you can do that & add a bit of wet dog food mixed in with the dry.

Purina one is a good brand of food for a puppy... I personally would feed twice a day then it will be easier to keep the potty training in hand... 2 cups morning 2 cups tea time.. Will help you understand the time/routine your dog has for poops

Bear in mind that the food manufacturers almost always put the amount at way beyond what most dogs need. If you can feel your puppy's ribs but not see them, she's probably having the right amount.
