my boyfriend boyfriend quit smoking only a few days ago, and he has horrible gas. this is not his first attempt and everytime the same problem, so we can be pretty positive that the not smoking is the cause of the problem. please let me know if this is normal, as i've never heard of such and effect. also, what can we do about it? he smells just awful. thanks

It sounds like he has Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is more innocent than it smells. However, I would have a doctor take a look at him, just as a precaution, to make sure it's not Infammatory Bowel disease. I hope everything works out!

Consider this: Smoking mainly affects the respiratory system (you inhale smoke into the lungs, etc) and having nothing to do with the digestive system (where your food breaks down during digestion causing gas or flatulence). So, probably not.
That being said, it is not uncommon to eat more when you are trying to quit smoking...for a number of reasons (replacing oral fixation, nervous energy, food tastes better when you aren't smoking!) Many smokers who are quitting or have recently quit report gaining a few pounds because their eating habits change slightly. Maybe its just a coincidence or maybe it's because you guys are eating more?
