I'm becoming a teacher in a city with a high Latino population so it would be beneficial for me to learn some Spanish. I drive a half hour to work everyday so I was considering getting an audio cd. I don't have time to study Spanish in my spare time but in the car would be great. I was wondering if anyone knows if those audiotapes really work? The one I'm looking at is 50 dollars and I'm really hesistant to spend the money!

Short Answer: YES, they can, but SAVE your money and get them from the LIBRARY!

Long answer:

Please do not buy these tapes. Get them from your local library, and if they do not have them...they will be happy to order them from you from another library.

When you study these tapes, you have to devote 100% attention to them....you cant listen to them in the car or at work or at the gym or anything like that. Sit down at home, with a piece of paper and a notebook and the materials that come with the tapes or cd and actually study it.

There is a series of tapes that I have particular experience with, that should be available on CD format as well at the library. It is called PIMSLEUR. It is available in many languages including spanish. Spanish has 90 (yes ninety!) tapes available , each one being 30 minutes. The way pimsleur works is very very cool. You listen to tape number one, then answer a shhort series of questions. If you get at least 80% right, you can move on to tape number two....if not , you repeat number one until you can get 80%. Then you work your way up, one 30 minute tape per day until you have done all 90.

If you do this, you WILL learn some spanish. It would be better to take a university level course, of COURSE, but these tapes are very convienient. Then, when you do take some spanish classes, you will be ready and get an easy A+.

Good luck!

It depends on how the program does it. If it simply repeats a sentence in Spanish and then tells you the English translation, it's unlikely that you would learn anything from that, because your brain doesn't have to actually understand any of the Spanish to get the meaning.

If I were you, I would get an audiorecording of some material that you already know well -- say a translation of a favorite book or something -- and listen to that, trying to understand as much as possible. Your previous knowledge of the material will help. Among other things, I used to listen to a tape of children's versions of scripture stories, for example.

The more Spanish you put into your mind, the more will be available when you want to speak. So do your best to try to understand as much Spanish as you can. It doesn't matter if at first you understand very little; your ability will grow.

And, of course, take opportunities to practice Spanish. In my experience of learning Spanish, I found that Spanish speakers were quite tolerant of me when I was trying to learn the language, and very willing to help by telling me the words for things, for example.

The ideal situation would be if you could take a class at a community college in the area. But if not, there are many things you can do to learn on your own.
