You're obviously a yank.

You want one world language? Pick any language EXCEPT English.

"What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call someone who only speaks one language? American."
- old joke and truism

I think the more languages you know, the less confusing the world is. And you really can't perfectly translate one language into another. By knowing a country's language you know more about the nation itself. Personally, I would like to learn as many languages as possible

I consider you one hundred%. Mankind might have over-polluted and built atomic guns, destroying the Earth hundreds of years in the past. Look at how so much vigor and what number of international locations Great Britain got here to vanquish. With it is one language and set of customs that had been pressured upon all of folks who had been conquered, at one factor in historical past, it was once stated that 'the solar in no way units at the English Empire'. They began the Industrial Revolution with assets stolen from world wide, which largely polluted Europe after which later the sector. Then, America separated from England, bringing with it the English language (truthfully, we talk American, right here) which was once pressured upon the natives. Today, with assets stolen from the natives, America is essentially the most strong nation on the earth.

I disagree. I feel that my life is better because of my knowledge of more than one language. I am familiar with more than one culture, and that gives me more options when I decide how I will behave and what I want my personal culture to be.

And as a linguist, I would like there to be more languages in the world, because it gives us more to study. We study human language in general, and if we don't have many languages to look at, we might not be able to observe some of the possible properties of language.

I don't know. I wouldn't like it if we lost all these languages. I think the languages themselves are beautiful. For example, more and more places are speaking English. That is just weird. I don't want to go to another country and have someone speaking English! I want it to be different in a different country!

I have a better idea.
Why don't we let everybody keep and converse in their own language, and introduce an easily learnt auxiliary language that people can use between cultures?

THAT is what Esperanto aims to achieve. It doesn't seek to replace all the languages of the world, contrary to what has been said.

Esperanto is growing exponentially these days thanks to the internet, so don't let anybody tell you it's not useful.

Gxis!

They made one, it's called Esperanto. It was invented by Dr. L.L. Lamenhof for the purpose of fostering peace and international understanding. It was developed sometime in the late 1870s and early 1880s. It was an interesting idea and is still used today. They say there are between 100,000 and 2 million people who are fluent in the language and approx. 1000 native speakers. Good luck!

I would like to cast my vote for Esperanto, also. I love the dream behind it, to promote world peace through everyone speaking the same neutral second language. I also love the fact that learning Esperanto has allowed me to speak to people from all over the world, from many different cultures, without falling prey to the world's opinion of US citizens at large, that we expect everyone to learn English.

Caroo, I'm afraid you're asking for the impossible! But I've heard linguists claim that English is a diificult language. Don't give up, though!

So you want to live in a mono-cultural, homogenously cloned utopian society where you want to be able to freely converse with everyone on a superficial level to mask your own sense of intellectual failings at being too lazy to learn of other peoples' cultures, customs and languages?
