I have a kitten who, despite our best twist-tying efforts, loves getting into our apartment fireplace through various cat-means. He's completely white, so it's pretty obvious when he gets in there--but my problem is... how do I get the soot off?
I've wiped him down with damp paper towels and baby wipes to no avail, haven't (and probably won't... gah) tried bathing him. Last time he got in was about three weeks ago and you can still see the marks it made, so I expect it stains. He just got a fresh coating of soot today.
Any ideas/similar situations, or should I just wait for it to fade from his fur?

Well, let's see here--I also have a pure white Turkish Angora cat who loves to tear up newspapers. This action also = grey cat. Sounds like you live in an apartment with a central (rather than individual) heating furnace. In most of these apartments you usually have a Maintenance guy on duty. If you can catch up to him and see if he has any idea of how "smokey" is getting in there, he could be a great asset. Or, I guess your next option would be to take him to a good groomer, get him all bathed and pretty and keep him confined to the
INSIDE of your apartment. If you don't want to keep him confined, then just get him to a good groomer to get cleaned up, and then, the next time he goes in there--do NOT get ANY form of liquid on him. Just have a good cat brush on hand, and as long as it's still in the "powdery" form, it should brush right out of him (let me guess, ummm-right onto your WHITE carpeting, right?) NO, of course he's not going to let "mommy" bathe him---mine won't--he turns into a wild-man! The groomer
raves about how great he is to work with. But, until you can get him to a groomer, do NOT use those baby wipes on him, it will only make it WORSE! The baby wipes have some kind of mild oil & aloe vera in them. Hope this little bit of info. will be somewhat helpful to you. YES, I feel your pain and I KNOW what he looks like---
and the only other thing I can say is: Why do our kitties do this kind of stuff to us?

I would try going to the local pet store for special shampoo for your cat, you really need to make sure you get all the soot and such out of the hair since cats regularly lick their fur and you dont want him eating that. Dont use any soaps or anything of yours unless you know (asked a vet) that it is safe for the cat.

Sorry but I think bathing is the only thing you can do. He won't enjoy it but hopefully he will eventually learn that getting in the fireplace means getting a bath then perhaps he will stop. I hope you don't end up with too many scars in the process.

LOL!!!
I can't imagine that licking all that soot off can be good for him. So I'd suggest bathing him. He's still young, he'll get over it.
Make sure you use a pet shampoo though - human shampoo is too strong.

Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder. Cover the pets head as best as possible before applying the powder. Don't use a plastic bag, else, you might suffocate the cat. Rub the Baby Powder into its coat. The fine silica powder will clean its coat. It also will kill any white fleas your cat may have. If the powder falls onto your carpets or furniture it will clean them too. ONLY use J&J, other makes aren't as good.

Batheing him is your best option, you do not want him licking that off himself.
If you don't want to do it yourself, take him to a groomer. They'd be your best bet anyways, they do it for a living so they better be darn good at it!
