Hi,

I'm looking into getting my first (and probably only) tattoo. I'd like the words "Endure", or perhaps "One must endure" to be inscribed somewhere in it -- as in, to withstand and survive life, or in the latter, like Hemingway's motto: "First, one must endure to survive."

I'd like those words to be in Latin, though. I obviously don't know any Latin, but the tattoo is important to me and if I'm getting something permanent written on my skin I'd like it to be correct. I've been told the following would be best:

Obdura for "Endure"
Oportet obdurare for "One must endure"
Patiendum Est for "One must endure"

Which of the above are correct? Which would you advise? Any other options..?

Thank you!

Just to refresh, the question wasn't your opinion on tattoos or if I should get one. It's about translation. Thanks ;)

Obdura = persist, hold out
Patiendum est = it is to be endured
Oportet obdurare = it is right/proper to persist (one should/ought to persist)

I would probably use dura instead of obdura for endure - just a slight difference; obdurare is just a variation of the primary verb durare.

Dura - endure (present imperative of durare)
Unus durato - one must endure (unus = one, + future imperative of durare)

How about you have a look here:

Before you tattoo, I would suggest you learn at least what each word means, alternative saying and so on... Even in English, one can say the same thing in many ways!!! Sometimes simple is better.

don't get a tattoo...you will regret it in the future...and sadly, the tattoo will endure
