The absolute best AntiVirus software is a Full System Backup. Not the stoopid restore thing that requires you to start the virus to start the restore, but a regular Backup Routing so when a virus or whatever does happen, and it will, you havethe clean data image safe and unaffected. PERIOD

Yes use an AV, AVG grisoft is good, but n Anti Virus is only as good as the most recentg update, and the update comes after the virus has been launched, so the backup is the only sure and proven method for data saftey and failure of loss.

I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Good stuff, free for everyone from:

an external firewall would help but wouldnt help you for downloaded viruses streamed via browsers. I recommend using Ad aware se personal for spyware and scanning for viruses with norton antivirus. and remember to set restore dates frequently.
BUTTTT.. ... the best thing you could do is ditch this windows garbage and run linux and never have to worry about any of this =)

AVG free edition is FREE and very good.....I have tried several commercial virus softwares with no better results. I have used AVG free for 3 years without a single infection.....
