It's not a matter of eating after a certain time. It's about eating and then going to bed. So, let's say you come home and you eat around 5pm, but you don't go to bed until 10p. Between this time period, you're probably up moving around, on the internet or whatever. You're not gaining wait by eating around 5pm. But if you come home and you eat around 5pm, then just go to sleep right after. The food is not properly digesting. Thus, you adding weight on to your body.

There's no proof that you necessarily gain weight after eating at a certain time, but if you eat less than 4-5 hours before you go to sleep, that leaves less time for you to digest. That, in turn, causes you to gain weight, because you aren't able to lose what you ate before you slept.
