She lies because it's worked for her in the past. If you have recently adopted this child maybe her past hasn't been a totally positive experience. With time, consistency, routine and by you leading by example she will learn that things are better and easier for people who are honest rather than dishonest.

When she lies you have to address it not ignore because only by seeing that lying does not allow her to avoid situations or consequences will she gradually learn to value honesty.

By 16 she's a young adult and she's not going to change by you going really hardcore on her. Lots of discussions and fairly applied and logical consequences are probably your best option. She needs to see that life is better when you treat other people how you want to be treated. I'm sure she doesn't want to be lied to but maybe she has in the past and this is why she does it. Maybe some counselling would be helpful.

Good luck.

She would need to see a psycologist about it. There is a disease that causes people to habitually lie that she could have. Or it could be a confidance issue or self esteem issue, maybe she is afraid of what the truth (if its bad for the other person) would do to how the other person would see her.

It needs to be professionally diagnosed.

what is she avoiding by lying? do you gripe alot? maybe if you just calm down your reactions to her crazy stuff she will not be afraid to share crazy things with you.
