First off, it's not a Mauser at all, it's a Steyr-Mannlicher m1895 or Model 95. You probably have the carbine, or short rifle, but if you have a 29 inch barrel it's a long rifle version.

This was an Austrian rifle adopted by the Hapsburg Empire or Austria Hungary. You rifle is known as the Hungarian m95, as it was made in Budapest Hungary.

It is in fact a 8x56r (r being for rimmed cartirdge) and not 8mm Mauser, so as you know it could be deadly to try and shoot the wrong ammo. During WWII, the Austrians and Hungarians sided with the Nazis and many of these rifles were rechambered for 8mm Mauser ammo, however yours was obvoiusly not.

These are a straight pull rifle and not a rotating bolt. They have been imported to the US in large numbers due to the fall of the Communist in Europe and sold quite cheap to collectors and shooters. Think of it as the spoils of the Cold War!

I have a couple and if you have shot yours, you know this not a rifle for wimps. It has one of the most severe felt recoils of any military rifle....which is why I love it being a avowed recoil freak.

SOG has the ammo, but stock up as it won't be around long and soon supplies will be gone. 250 Rd Tin $47.95 plus shipping or the Nazi stamped for a 250 Rd Case $57.50. They are basically the same ammo, just some was German made and has the waffenampt seal of the Wermacht, so people pay more for it.

All this is from memory, so excuse me if I got something wrong....I included a long list of links for info but call SOG and order as much ammo as you can and SAVE THE BRASS...you may need to have it reloaded one day.

It ain't Mauser. Try again looking for Mannlicher. You may have to go to Old Western Scrounger, since it's not your usual caliber. Or you could load your own, if you've saved your brass. That's certainly an easy option when you have a rare bird.

Is the ammo that you have Berdan primed? If not, then a resizing die would most likely be your answer. If your ammo is Berdan primed, that is a military type cartridge, then you might have to go to the other type of round.

DJ nailed this one! You really should bookmark the links he posted too, they'll come in handy if you keep your rifle.
