Its is named The Laughing Magpie, after a the local Kookaburra bird which is colored black & white and has a screeching call.

And the name is also suitable because the wine is a blend of the black Shiraz and white Viognier grapes. Actually, blend doesn't really convey the usage, because blending white wines with red wines would make the resulting wine paler. But in this case a very small percentage of white Viognier grapes are added to the Shiraz grapes and they are fermented together where a chemical reaction with the Viognier intensifies color and flavor extraction from the Shiraz

It is a method long practised in the Rhone but no one there really knew why, it was just traditional. Researchers at the Universtity of Berkeley in California discovered the beneficial effect, and now this 'co-fermentation' is becoming quite common in Australia, California and the rest ofthe new world where Shiraz is made.
