The heart receives and pumps blood to all parts of the body. Athletes and sports persons generally have a lower heart rate because their regular exercise, work-outs and (generally) healthy eating habits and practices makes way for a strong and healthy heart that works efficiently and effectively. This means that just one "pump" from their heart works more effectively (and uses less effort) to get blood to all parts of the athletes body. Conversely, a heart that is less strong may need to pump say twice, to achieve the same result for blood to reach all parts of a person's body. The net effect is that sports persons may have a heart rate of between 40 to 50 beats a minute (which will be considered normal for them); whilst its common for folks who don't exercise much to have heart rates between 72 to 90.

No. Your heart rate is fine. You are at rest, and you walk often. A "normal" range for heart rate can be anywhere from 64-80 beats per minute when at rest, but a high heart rate is more of a cause for alarm than a low rate. If that figure for Lance Armstrong is correct, he must have a very large, well-toned heart. 34 is usually dangerously low, but he is obviously in top physical condition. Endurance training enlarges the heart and increases stroke volume, which is why it causes a lower pulse rate.

Prolonged practice increases the output of heart. So minimum beats produce maximum output. Low BP,lower heart rate and low blood glucose are thus cosidered normal among sportsmen.

I think it is because the heart is more efficient, it can deliver more blood per beat because the muscle has grown to meet these demands.

i would imagine constant exercise/proper diet keeps their heart rates low. people with high blood pressure don't do or watch what they eat as much as they should.
