The truth is we just don't know the exact number, for obvious reasons. Some of the prior estimates have been way off, and tend to underestimate the number of illegal hispanics within US borders. The current estimate is about 16 million of the 42 million hispanics in the US are immigrants, but that may be off by several million.

According to the official US Bureau of the Census, as of 2005, here are the statistics as they are able to determine:

AMERICA'S HISPANIC POPULATION IS GROWING by leaps and bounds. In 2005 it topped 42 million or 14.4 percent of the overall population, a .3 percent jump in the total from 2004.

Immigration from the Spanish-speaking countries of the Western hemisphere, led by Mexico, is creating America's largest demographic shift since the early 20th century. Well over one-third of the country's Hispanic population--about 16 million people--are immigrants. Combined, native-born and immigrant Hispanic Americans now outnumber the 34.3 million Americans who claim Irish descent--

Here is another website information from May, 2006:
Hispanic or Latino 42,687,224 , or 14.4 percent of the population.

as of the 2000 census, : 35,305,818 , or 12.5 percent of the population.

It signifies that we've a tremendous type of Hispanic immigrants. even as they assimilate, Spanish will die off. even as there became a wave of German immigration, many human beings spoke German, besides the undeniable fact that it truly is no longer that way anymore. in reality, they used to have German textbooks alongside English ones in college, besides the undeniable fact that it became determined that to unify the rustic with a instantly ahead language, those books might want to be burned and German babies might want to study English. even as the Italians got here right here, many spoke Italian, yet no longer anymore. All this suggests is that there has been a present day wave of Hispanic immigration to the U.S.

You have also got to remember there is alot of mix. Some fair skins hispanics do not want to be associated with hispanics or Mexicans. Therefore they marry a Smith or Jones. There is another thing some people do not think about. All spanish names originated from Spain not Mexico.
